Ekaterina Lobanova, PhD

  • Associate Professor

Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Dr. Lobanova was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Florida, Gainesville.  She received her BS in Physics at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia), followed by her PhD in Physics and Mathematics (specialization Biophysics) for the same university.  Her thesis was “Mechanisms of Self-Organization and Pattern Formation in Blood Coagulation.”  Dr. Lobanova completed post-doctoral training in Molecular Basis of Eye Diseases in the laboratory of Professor Vadim Arshavsky at Albert Eye Research Institute (Duke Medical School) and Mass Eye & Ear (Harvard Medical School).

The long term goal of her laboratory is to identify and develop approaches to target common pathobiological mechanisms shared between multiple forms of retinal degeneration with the two most mature directions as follows:  Targeting Ubiquitin Proteasome System Insufficiency to Delay Vision Loss and Altered Phospholipid Composition as a Driver of Retinal Degeneration and Visual Dysfunction.
